Results – Whitey Picks for April 16th
Tampa Bay -Race 7
#8 Mr Sluggo – 12-1 – This is one of my favorite angles and has produced some nice returns. Horse racing 2nd time at tampa who showed speed in first race and now stretches out. For some reason, horses need a race on the tampa surface and typically improve 2nd out. He showed speed in a sprint last time before fading. Now he stretches out and is the only speed in the race and should control it up front. He comes out of tougher races at gulfstream where he was bet. He was also bet in his last at tampa.
$20 win and place 8
**********Result – Off board
Off Odds – 10-1
Race Conditions – 8K NW3L
Re-cap – Sluggo was hammered early in the wagering and was bet down to 3-1, but by post time he was at 10-1. Jockey let a longshot set the pace while he rated in 2nd. He made a premature move when challenged by the eventual winner and tired badly in the stretch
Lessons Learned – Wasn’t a huge fan of the ride he got but he could be one to watch next time with the presence of the inside money.
Stable Notes – Took inside money. Needs race with lack of pace going long.
Tampa Bay – Race 8
#4 – All the Bases – 8-1 – With the scratch of the 7 horse tide table, he becomes the only speed horse in the race. Typically race set up is not the ideal play on turf races but I’m thinking this could be a wire job. The race two back at same distance he set very fast fractions and faded and the horse he lost to was an absolute monster.
$20 win 4 – $2 exacta box 3-4-5
********Result – 1st
Off Odds – 11-1
Race Conditions – Open 16K
Re-Cap – Whitey was cursing the jockey when he sprinted clear by 6 while setting a very fast pace, but the horse kept on trucking and won by a widening 7 at the wire. One of the easiest wins ever and played out exactly as envisioned (minus the fast pace).
Lessons Learned – The only reason this even became a play was because of the late scratch of the other speed horse. It pays to check the late scratches and adjust if needed.
Stable Notes – Something tells me that the horse that Scratched – Tide Table – needs to go in the stable. Crafty trainer scratched horse with presence of other speedball. Consider next out if race lacks speed.
Finger Lakes – Race 2
#8 Ativa – 3-1 – Horse ship sup from Tampa and is only the speed in the race. Don’t see anyone beating this one at 4.5 furlongs
$20 win 8
***********Result – 1st
Off Odds – 7-5
Race Conditions – 4K NW3L
Re-Cap – Didn’t see the race but was glad he won
Lessons Learned – Tampa shippers are always dangerous. Lone speed, best pace figs, and class drop is a money angle.
Stable Notes
Gulfstream -Race 6
#1 Kitten’s Caregiver – 10-1 Didn’t like slop in last. Switches to preferred distance.
$10 Win 1
********Result – Off Board
Off Odds – 31-1
Race Conditions – 10K NW3L
Re-Cap – Race was taken off the turf when a thunderstorm rolled through. So, this should have been no play. My selection didn’t like slop before but actually race a decent race rallying for 4th.
Lessons Learned – Nothing you can do about act of nature
Stable Notes – Caught sloppy track in last two. Play in Sprint on dry track
Gulfstream Race 7
#7 Grand Reality – 8-1- Almost made this one a lock. Takes blinkers off and returns to turf, which is where he wanted to be all along. He faced some tough ones on turf at Kennland and Churchill in allowance races and now gets NW2L claimers. Son of Grand Slam bred for Turf. Not sure last 6 races were on turf. He is also switching to a trainer who does well on turf.
$25 Win and Place 7 – $2 Exbox 4-7-9
********Result – Off board (but hit exacta with other two selections) – Exacta paid $126
Off Odds – 3-1
Race Conditions – 20KNW2L
Re-Cap – Race was taken off turf so selection became lame duck. Selection didn’t like sloppy track.
Lessons Learned – Exacta box saved us on this one. There is a big difference between allowance and NW2L conditons. Winner faced much better in allowance races.
Stable Notes – Play back in next on turf. Odds should be generous with darkened form off effort in slop
No Influence – Rallied nice for 2nd. Comes out of key race before when losing to Bruce Alley. Bred for turf out of Pleasantly Perfect and AP Indy on dam side. Play on Turf.
Keeneland – Race 9 – Bluegrass
#6 – Sensational Slam – 10-1 – Last year Whitey called 20-1 pletcher trained Exhi a lock because he was the only speed in the race. And he won in wire to wire fashion. Whitey will see if history can repeat. Pletcher has another speed horse in here and there is not much pace in here today. A wire job is possible.
$20 win on 6 – $2 ex box 3-6-11
*****Result – Off Board
Off Odds – 10-1
Race Conditions – Stakes
Re-Cap – Horse never got lead as expected and was basically toast after that
Lessons Learned – The bluegrass continues to produce longshot after longshot. Anytime Lezcano is on a horse give 2nd thought about him getting to the lead. He is not a send jockey.
Stable Notes
Oaklawn – Race 1
#1 My Paige’s Jewel – 10-1 – Drops and stretches out. Love any horse dropping from MSW sprints to MCL routes. He showed speed in sprints so potential to wire a really bad field.
$15 Win and Place 1
*********Result – 1st
Off Odds – 3-1
Race Conditions – MCL 15K
Re-Cap – Horse set the pace as expected and battled back in the stretch when headed to prevail by a neck.
Lessons Learned – Extra credit to horses dropping from MSW to MCl and stretching out after showing good pace figs in sprints.
Stable Notes – Possible play back in next race as he was only one of two horses to win on the lead all day. The other was a chalk. Won on lead on closers track. Though met a very bad maiden field.
